Field test, Ghana
energy and fertilizer
To define the required input composition, preferred waste treatment process and the optimal technical requirements for optimal production of energy and fertilizer. Specifically we will conduct:
- a market analysis to define the preferred energy and fertilizer product and market entry strategy;
- a mapping of waste systems to aid resourcing, and define waste mixes;
- a study of the technical treatment processes in the context of Accra;
- a ‘proof of principle’ by field-testing in Accra;
- a test of the business and roll-out strategy.
the test site
In Ashaiman, we have constructed a test plant to enable us to test all the separate phases of the Safi Sana ‘waste re-use’ concept. The site is 0.5 acres and consists of a small toilet block (2 units), a pre-treatment section for the waste, two separate digesters (total 16 m3) and a post-treatment plant where we produce the organic fertilizer.
With our partners we conduct two separate market studies. The first focuses on the collection and distribution of the various waste and product streams. The second focuses on the need and local demand specifications for an alternative fertilizer able to compete with traditional methods in the local agricultural sector.
