organic fertilizer

Fertilizers are used to supply nutrients to plants or improve the fertility of soil, providing an effect means of increasing crop yields and ensuring long-term soil use. The main ‘macro’ nutrients in most fertilizers include nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, with other ‘micro’ nutrients added in smaller amounts.

product development

Currently in Ghana we are working with academic and other institutional partners to develop an organic fertilizer that can be substituted in place of existing chemical-based fertilizers. This will meet or exceed health and safety guidelines, as well as being a better choice to meet environmental and sustainability goals.

The first step in the development process was to identify the specific needs of the local farmers and the core crops that they grow. Our study was focused on the evaluation of current requirements and the composition of our fertilizer, including pathogens, macro & micro-nutrients and removal of heavy metals. We are also looking at the product form and the preferred proportion of the nutrients. This information is being used for the design of the final production process, including waste resourcing and treatment technology.

By mid 2012 we aim to have a product ready for the local market. Updates can be found on our blog.

business case

The sale of organic fertilizer is one of the two core income generators (energy is the other) of the Safi Sana waste re-use model.
