waste resourcing & treatment

The waste from the Communal Service Blocks is one of the raw materials used in the production of both the energy and the fertilizer. Forming a critical part of the business model, it is important to understand how the quality and quantity of this feedstock will vary over time, and how this fits with transport and storage. Safi Sana is working with local and national institutions including BNARI,  IFDC and the University of Wageningen, to ensure that the waste is handled safely, efficiently and optimally. We also work with various other types of waste streams, depending on the local availability and need. Examples include other toilet waste, as well as slaughterhouse, food and agricultural waste. Collection is done in cooperation with existing local transport companies.

treatment of the waste

Before the waste is actually processed, we ensure that any material that may disrupt the treatment process is removed. The various waste streams are then blended and left in hydraulic retention in an anaerobic digester. At this point in the process, biogas is produced, the majority of harmful bacteria are destroyed and the resulting effluent becomes ready for further post-treatment into organic fertilizer.

operations

The installation of the plant and training of the staff are the responsibility of Safi Sana; the daily operation of the plant – including the collection of the waste and other tasks – is handled by our local partner.
