Safisana, a Dutch pioneering business in the African circular economy, is seeking to hire a new Financial Controller (32 - 40 hours/week) to manage all finance and accounting operations of Safisana Group, including Safisana Foundation and Holding in the Netherlands, and current and future operational entities in and outside Ghana. 

Our mission
Safisana is an international social enterprise that has developed a circular and sustainable waste-to-resource model for non-sewered urban areas in low and middle-income countries. By treating faecal waste and organic waste as a resource to produce renewable energy and organic fertilizer, the Safisana Solution creates impact and contributes to multiple SDGs related to climate, health, sanitation and food security. The first Safisana recycling plant opened in 2017 in Accra, reaching around 150,000 people. In the coming decade, we aim to replicate the model in and outside Ghana and to exponentially grow our impact.

How you can contribute
In your role as a Financial Controller, you will be based in Weesp (Greater Amsterdam). As part of a small team in an innovative and entrepreneurial business environment that operates across the continents, we look for an open, flexible and entrepreneurial spirit with a pro-active, hands-on working mentality. Your main responsibility as a Financial Controller is to ensure the financial health of the Safisana Group which includes Safisana Foundation, Safisana Holding and the local entities, by overseeing all financial planning and analysis activities. In this role, you will work closely together with the Business Controller in Holding, and with the financial team in Ghana, in an exhilarating international environment. Travelling to Ghana, at least once a year is part of the deal. 

Your job
Besides that, your work includes all finance and accounting operations (incl. billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition); tracking, reporting, and analysing budget variances; reviewing the company's financial statements; preparing month-end reports for management, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements; recommending changes in policies or procedures to improve financial performance; forecasting future financial performance; preparing and analysing budgets; ensuring compliance with government regulations; develop and document accounting policies and processes to maintain and strengthen internal controls. 

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Bookkeeping for Safisana Foundation and Holding in The Netherlands
  • Salary administration NL (incl. mutations, contracts, pension, insurances)
  • VAT declaration
  • Invoice management/ Payments
  • Budget request and project support: accounting & financial reporting (actuals)
  • Safisana Group audit, cash flow management, tax compliance and financial control
  • Process and tool implementation & maintenance
  • Group finance/accounting procedures & manual (incl. grants booking)

Required experience and skills

  • 100% accuracy
  • Proven working experience as a Financial Controller
  • 5+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
  • Advanced degree in Accounting; CPA or CMA preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
  • Experience with creating financial statements, and general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Excellent tooling: database management, accounting software user and administration skills
  • Efficiency mindset to look at improving processes (tech-savvy)
