Safisana is featured in the Dutch documentary “De Vegan Veehouder”. Renowned photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen and famous Kipster and Vegan Farmer Ruud Zanders visit Safisana’s waste-to-resource site to learn about our circular model contributing to closing the loop of sustainable and organic food production. During their visit, Ruud speaks with Safisana’s board member Naalamle Amissah about one of our valuable outputs Asase Gyefo Premium organic Fertilizer.
De Vegan Veehouder
In the documentary De Vegan Veehouder (The Vegan Farmer), Kadir van Lohuizen follows Ruud Zanders on his quest to discover if - and how - we can create a world without production animals, a sustainable world. Along the way, Kadir explores the challenges and debates that arise: Can you be vegan and still be a farmer? Is it possible to achieve sustainable circularity without animal production? And are we genuinely transforming the system, or simply sustaining it?
Building a resilient and sustainable food system
If we want to change our food system, we must not only look at what’s on our plate. We need to consider what happens to what’s left over. We are honored that our sustainable circular solution in Ghana features in this global conversation on the future of our food systems. Safisana collects organic waste from local markets and transforms it into premium organic fertilizer to enhance sustainable food production.

Closing the loop with Safisana
During their visit to Safisana Ghana, Ruud speaks with our valued board member Naalamle Amissah, lecturer in the Crop Science Department at the University of Ghana, about the unique method of waste management by Safisana and the production of our Organic Fertilizer. At our site, our former Quality and Safety Manager guides Ruud through our plant while elaborating on our production process.
The Safisana model proves that circular systems work at scale in a non-sewered urban area context, managing organic and human fecal waste from markets, households, and food production sustainably. Whether farming is plant-based or animal-based, healthy soils are essential. Safisana’s organic fertilizer reduces dependence on chemical inputs, making plant-based farming more viable and sustainable. We transform the system by closing nutrient cycles, reducing methane emissions, and improving soil health, addressing climate, health, and food security at once.
The documentary is set to premiere on September 11th at the Schouwburg Venray. Together with parliament member Laura Bromet and deputy Jasper Kuntzelaers, Ruud and Kadir will review the documentary live. For tickets, click here.
