Our Stronger Together pilot project with Plan International Ghana is coming to an end this month. During the past year, we worked hand in hand with the people of Ashaiman, focusing on empowering women and girls and delivering practical and theoretical training to improve health, economic, and environmental conditions in the community. Some of these trainings were tailored to the market women and the female farmers of the Ashaiman Irrigation Scheme and Michel Camp Irrigation Scheme. Together, we built a trellis system (a support structure for the vertical growth of crops to improve sunlight exposure and air movement) to support cucumber’s growth and achieve optimum crop production (and yield) and discussed different marketing strategies to accelerate the sales of organic products.

Demonstrating Sustainable Farming Practices

In February 2025, Plan International and Safisana worked with the female farmers at the Ashaiman and Michel Camp. Together, we created a demo plot to showcase effective and sustainable farming methods. Located close to Safisana’s waste-to-energy plant in Ashaiman, we dedicated 500 m2 of farmland for this purpose.

As can be seen in the picture above, we built a demo plot. The long-term goal is for farmers to adopt these low-cost, effective structures to promote sustainable agriculture and improve their livelihoods.
A cost-effective method to support plant growth

We optimised the vertical space by utilising a trellis system using bamboo, binding wire, and trellising twine. This system effectively supports the growth of crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, and others from the Cucurbitaceae family. The relatively cheaper vertical setup helps increase yield and, therefore, income potential for farmers and market women.

We also use the plot to train farmers on the optimal application of our Premium Organic Fertilizer Asase Gyefo. Organic fertilizer is much healthier for the soil and plants than chemical fertilizer. Different crops benefit from different application methods, and the demo plot allows us to demonstrate these techniques.  While the structure is labour-intensive, its durability and long-term benefits for plant growth, crop yield, and income make it a worthwhile investment.

Female Farmer and Market Women Trainings: Theoretical Knowledge

Besides practical training, Stronger Together also takes a theoretical approach. We organized several sessions for farmers and market queens focused on marketing, selling strategies, and value addition.

On the 15th and 16th of April, we held a 2-day training for farmers and market women in Ashaiman, facilitated by a diverse team of experts, including agric extension officers, agronomists, and a professor from the University of Ghana, Legon’s Agricultural Department. Generally, training topics included marketing and product placement, selling strategies, the value of organic vs inorganic products, and maximising market potential in Ashaiman.

Together with Plan International Ghana, we are proud to have reached over 10,000 households through the Stronger Together project. From agriculture to entrepreneurship, to health awareness and environmental education, we created a lasting impact in Ashaiman.
