Since the beginning of this year, we have welcomed many national and international visitors to our recycling plant in Ashaiman. In March, we hosted a large group of representatives and members of the Global Methane Hub on a site tour.  Afterward, we interviewed Marcelo Mena, CEO of the Global Methane Hub about his impressions and thoughts on the Safisana Solution.

How did you come to know about Safisana?
"We got to know about Safisana through interactions with our networks in the waste management space in Ghana. Safisana came up as a great waste circular economy model that has at its core, community participation, a development practice that GMH advocates for in our work.
"We were thrilled for you to show our board of directors and staff the important work that you do. We believe that our partners know what is best for their communities and are honored to support the work that is making a real impact on slowing global warming. Safisana is a prime example of turning an idea into action in a way that is benefiting the local community and we wanted to show as much of our team as possible."

After the visit, what was your impression of Safisana's plant and the model?

"The team was impressed by how organized and innovative the system is. It is so well integrated into the local community and is bringing much-needed relief. The people powering the system were informed, friendly, and passionate about the work they do. It inspired us all."

Do you believe in the power of local solutions and global impact?
"The only way to have a large impact is to invest in local solutions. Solutions that make a large global impact are local solutions that can be scaled or replicated across the globe. Especially when we consider an environmental justice lens, which is important to us at GMH, we know that we have to build solutions in partnership with communities."

How would you envision a potential partnership or collaboration between the Global Methane Hub and Safisana?
"
GMH is continuously looking for catalytic investments which can show results, and attract additional funding to scale work. Safisana has been able to do that, and it is impressive. The Hub focuses its work on financing, data, and practical solutions, so we will keep an open dialogue with Safisana to continue to see what is needed, and how we could help open doors through our multiple partners, to scale this work."
